Turkey hopes for a speedy establishment of peace in Ukraine, said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a press conference before leaving for Saudi Arabia, Beyaz Gazete reports.

Erdogan added that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and UN Secretary General António Guterres positively assessed the talks between them in Moscow. “He (Guterres.— RBC) called me after talks with Putin and [Russian Foreign Minister Sergei] Lavrov [and called them] positive. Putin said that he thinks the same, — said the head of state.

The fact that Turkey expects to achieve peace in Ukraine “as soon as possible”, Erdogan said earlier in a telephone conversation with Putin. He stressed Ankara's readiness to “take the initiative in its own hands”; and be a mediator on the path to peace.

Putin, at a meeting with Guterres on April 26, said that the Russian and Ukrainian delegations at the talks in Istanbul at the end of March “reached a breakthrough.” As a result of the meeting, Kyiv handed over to Moscow written proposals for a peace agreement, and the Russian side agreed to reduce military activity in the Kiev and Chernigov directions. Erdogan, who was actively involved in organizing the meeting, said there was a “significant impetus to the peace process.”

On April 22, Lavrov said that negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv were moving “slowly, slowly.”
