Russian Ambassador to Israel Anatoly Viktorov was summoned to the Israeli Foreign Ministry for a meeting with the Deputy Director General of the Ministry for clarification after an interview with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. This was reported by the press service of the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
Earlier in an interview with Mediaset, Lavrov did not rule out that the head of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, could be of Jewish origin. “If I remember correctly, I'm afraid to make a mistake, but in my opinion Hitler also had Jewish blood,” — he said. The Russian minister's statement came in response to a remark by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who previously spoke of his Jewish roots and the “failure” of “denazification” operations Ukraine.
“Foreign Minister Lavrov's remarks are both an unforgivable and outrageous statement and a terrible historical error. Jews did not kill themselves during the Holocaust. The lowest level of racism towards Jews — is to accuse the Jews themselves of anti-Semitism,— Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement.
Russia has been conducting a military operation in Ukraine since February 24. President Vladimir Putin justified it by protecting civilians in Donbass from “bullying, genocide”; from Kyiv, as well as the need for “demilitarization and denazification” Ukraine. He assured that Russia does not intend to occupy the territory of a neighboring state.
After the start of the special operation, the Ukrainian authorities introduced martial law and announced mobilization. Head of State Volodymyr Zenlensky also ruled out the presence of anti-Semitism in Ukraine and said that he himself was a Jew. “I have Jewish blood. And I'm the president. And nobody cares, right? Nobody cares. Nobody asks me about it, — he noted.
