S7 Airlines will return two Boeings abroad 737 MAX. This is stated in the order of the government.

«Allow OOO«Globus» [subsidiary of S7 Group] <…> until December 31, 2022, inclusive, export outside the territory of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Turkey of goods according to the list according to the appendix, — the document says.

The appendix specifies that we are talking about two Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft. There are no permits for the operation of these aircraft in Russia.

S7 airline is the declarant and consignor. The government has instructed the Federal Customs Service (FCS) to oversee the return of the two Boeing 737-8 MAX to Turkey.

Earlier, S7 Airlines applied to the Ministry of Transport for the return of two Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft to the lessor due to the lack of a certificate and the impossibility of operation.

On July 1, Minister of Transport Vitaly Savelyev announced that S7 could return Boeing 737-8 aircraft MAX to the manufacturer with the permission of a special commission for the export of aircraft abroad.

The representative of S7 explained to RBC that the aircraft would be returned to Turkey at the request of the lessor as in the near abroad.

The use of 737-8 MAX aircraft was banned in Russia in March 2019. Re-certification was not carried out.

Russia resorted to such a measure after two plane crashes that happened to the Boeing 737 MAX. In October 2018, a MAX 8 operated by Indonesian Lion Air crashed. Then 189 people died. The second accident with a Boeing of the same model occurred on March 10. In Ethiopia then crashed a plane belonging to Ethiopian Airlines. 157 people became victims.

In Russia, the only operator — S7 airline. Under the S7 brand, two Boeing 737 MAX flew in the airline “Globus” until the type certificate is cancelled.

In late February, the US, UK, EU and other countries closed their airspace to Russian aircraft and imposed a series of sanctions. Among other things, a ban was introduced on the sale of aircraft and spare parts to Russia, as well as on the provision of maintenance and insurance services to Russian airlines. Leasing companies began to delay airliners leased by Russian companies at airports.

Rosaviatsia recommended that air carriers that have aircraft under foreign lease suspend flights abroad. By the end of June, the number of countries where Russian companies continue to operate flights amounted to 11.
