The EU urged to check the origin of grain supplied by Russia
The representative of the EU Foreign Service said that states wishing to purchase grain on the market should clearly understand where it comes from
The European Union calls on all countries of the world not to buy grain from Russia exported from the territory of Ukraine, it is necessary to clarify its origin, said in During the briefing, EU Foreign Service Representative Peter Stano was broadcast on the European Commission's YouTube channel.
Stano referred to data from the EU Foreign Service, according to which Russia “tried to sell a consignment of grain to Egypt.” Egypt has backed out of the deal, the official said.
After the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, shipping in the northwestern part of the Black Sea was limited. During the conflict, several million tons of grain accumulated in Ukrainian ports. In turn, Oleg Kobyakov, director of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for communication with Russia, cited data according to which grain stuck in Ukrainian ports is less than 1% of the grain turnover on the international market.
Ukraine accuses Russia of blocking ships, and the UN is urging Moscow to allow ships to leave ports. The organization believes that the current state of affairs exacerbates the food crisis, as Ukraine is one of the key exporters of wheat.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that the country does not prevent ships from leaving ports. Moscow claims that the ships cannot leave the harbor, as the coastal waters are mined by Kyiv. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized that Moscow would not change its position on this issue, and called on Kyiv to “understand this.”
President Vladimir Putin argued that food supply problems had caused “disruptions in production and supply chains” and offered to help resolve the crisis if sanctions were lifted from the country.
